Two patients dead at Hillmorton Hospital
Two patients died unexpectedly within six days of one another at a Christchurch mental health hospital last month.
The Canterbury District Health Board has confirmed the coroner is investigating two "unexpected deaths" at Hillmorton Hospital in November.
One patient died on November 19 and another patient died on November 24.
"The coroner has been notified and will be investigating the deaths. Our condolences go out to those bereaved by these tragedies," CDHB chief medical officer Dr Nigel Millar said.
"It is a matter of great concern to us when people die while in our care. Our first concern is the tragedy that this represents to the families and friends of those who have died and we will do all we can to support them and keep them informed."
Dr Millar said the CDHB had a process when a patient died unexpectedly, to ensure all the circumstances were reviewed in detail. This was an attempt to limit the chances of it occurring again.
The age and gender of the patients has not been revealed.
