Police are looking for a man they believe can help their investigation of the attempted abduction of a girl in Timaru.

He is Blaine Ross Hughes, 20, of Washdyke, police said.

The search for Hughes follows the attempted abduction of a 13-year-old girl as she cycled along State Highway 8 near Sir Basil Arthur Park at 8pm on Tuesday.

Detective Senior Sergeant Marion Neill said a man allegedly grabbed the girl off her bicycle and dragged her across a fence into a bush area. A witness from a nearby address went to the girl's aid and the alleged offender ran off.

She said police believed Hughes had information that could help police with their inquiry.

It is understood he could be driving a green and gold Isuzu Bighorn, registration YA9089, which was reported stolen yesterday from a Washdyke address.

"This man may still be in the South Canterbury area, but he is also known to have associates in Christchurch and other parts of the South Island," Neill said.

"We are appealing for him to contact us, or for anyone who knows his whereabouts to pass that information on to police."

After the incident police described the alleged offender as a male European, of dark complexion, aged in his 20s, about 1.74 metres tall, clean-shaven, with dark hair and of solid build.

He was reported to be wearing a cap, a white hoodie with a grey triangular pattern, and maroon jeans.

Timaru police are continuing to appeal for information from anyone who was near the park between 7.45pm and 8.20pm on Tuesday.
