Four trampers have been rescued by helicopter from dense bush near Nelson after becoming stranded by swollen streams.
The trampers were stranded on a dense bush spur, surrounded by rising river flows, near the end of the Mt Richmond Forest Park alpine route in the Wairoa Gorge area south of Nelson.
The group activated a locator beacon about 5pm yesterday after deciding not to attempt crossing the river.
Each tramper was winched 30 metres up to the rescue helicopter and given a medical check, before being flown back to the car park at the start of the route.
