An alleged "peeping tom" is facing a court date for trying to peer into women's toilet cubicles in the Christchurch Botanic Gardens.

The 27-year-old will appear in the Christchurch District Court on Thursday charged with committing an indecent act.

Police said a woman and her two children, aged 5 and 8, were using the women's toilets near the children's playground about 7.45pm on Friday when they noticed the man loking at them.

A police spokesman said attending officers arrested the man without incident.
