An elderly woman was left shocked and bruised after she was robbed while walking to visit her husband in hospital.
The 70-year-old had parked her car near Hagley Ave about 2.20pm on Monday and was on her way to Christchurch Hospital when a man ran up behind her, grabbed her handbag and fled.
She fell and suffered minor bruising, but otherwise unhurt, police said.
It appeared the robber withdrew money using the woman's bank card a short time later.
Police were working with the bank to try and identify the thief, a spokesman said.
The offender was wearing a grey top, but no further description was available.
Anyone who saw the incident or a person acting suspiciously near the tennis courts at Riccarton Ave between 2pm and 2.30pm on Monday is asked to call police on (03) 363 7400.
