The Akademik Shokalskiy arrived into Bluff harbour at 7.45am after its ice-bound voyage in the Antarctic.

The Russian research vessel became stuck in thick ice on Christmas Eve with 52 passengers and 22 crew on board.

The passengers were airlifted off after spending Christmas and New Year's Eve on the trapped vessel.

Ministry for Primary Industries staff will meet with the crew this morning and check the vessel.

Media have been asked to stay away until inspections have been made.
