One man has been killed and another hospitalised in two separate tractor accidents in the Tasman district today.

Gary Noel Wakefield, 67, was killed while mowing an apple orchard at a Seaview Ave property in Lower Moutere about 8.25am today.

Police said workers in the area were unable to free Wakefield after he became pinned underneath the tractor.

He died at the scene.

A police spokeswoman said a workplace accident investigation was underway.

In the second incident, a 53-year-old Tapawera man was flown to Nelson Hospital after his tractor rolled about 2pm.

A Nelson-Marlborough Rescue Helicopter spokesperson said the man was working on a farm and heading up a hill when the tractor slid backwards and rolled.

The man was treated at the accident site before being airlifted to hospital in a stable condition.
