A boating trip in the Catlins turned to tragedy when a teenage girl died after the boat she was on capsized.
The 13-year-old girl had been on a boat trip on Surat Bay this afternoon with her 48-year-old father and a male friend, also aged 13.
Senior Sergeant Steve Aitken said initial information indicated the boat's engine started to fail and cut out about 300 metres from the shore.
The boat became swamped before capsizing.
Emergency services from Balclutha and Owaka were called to the scene about 1.30pm, along with the Dunedin-based rescue helicopter.
The man and boy made it to shore together, while the girl was found on shore about 30 minutes later.
"Tragically resuscitation attempts to revive her were unsuccessful," Aitken said.
All three were wearing life jackets.
Weather conditions were windy at the time and had been described as "rough" by people at the scene, Aitken said.
