Four tourists have been injured after a serious head-on crash near Kaikoura.

A Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter spokesman said a van and a car collided head-on on State Highway 1 north of Kaikoura at about 3pm.

The two occupants of the car, a 24-year-old female and a 22-year-old male, both from Germany, sustained serious injuries in the crash, he said.

They were treated at the scene for "trauma injuries" by the helicopter's intensive care paramedic before being flown to Christchurch Hospital in a stable condition.

The occupants of the van, a male and female both aged in their early twenties, were taken to Kaikoura Medical Centre with minor injuries.

They were also tourists, but their nationality was not yet know, the spokesman said.

The lower drink-driving limits from December are:

Great - too much carnage on our roads.

Overkill - targets moderate drinkers, not the heavies

Still too little - make it zero tolerance.

Sensible - punishment is in line with lesser breaches of limit.
