Two people have been airlifted to hospital following a crash that closed part of State Highway 1.

The crash happened north of Pukeuri, near Oamaru, about 11.30am today.

Senior Sergeant Steve Aitken said a campervan travelling south collided with a front-end loader that was also travelling south.

The campervan rolled and two occupants, a male and a female, suffered serious injuries.

The pair had been flown to Dunedin Hospital.

The driver of the front-end loader was not injured in the crash.

State Highway 1 was closed for the entire afternoon while police serious crash investigators were at the scene.

Diversions were available, adding about 30 minutes on to the journey, but one lane of the road was expected to reopen by 6pm.

Anyone who witnessed the crash is asked to contact Oamaru police.
