Drowned woman named
Police have named a Nelson woman who drowned while swimming at Rabbit Island Beach.
Emergency services were called to the beach after 71-year-old Adelheid Wilma Stock was pulled unconscious from the water about 5pm yesterday.
She had been swimming with a friend at the time.
Stock was pulled from the water by members of the public, who began CPR before emergency services arrived.
Police, St John, the Fire Service and the Nelson-Marlborough Rescue Helicopter responded to the emergency call, but Stock died at the beach.
Police spokeswoman Barbara Dunn said police thanked the members of the public who were first on the scene.
Stock's death has been referred to the coroner.
