Man threatens to set house alight
A Temuka man has been arrested after pouring petrol throughout a property and threatening to set it alight.
Temuka and Timaru police were called to the Alexandra St address in Temuka at 8pm last night following a domestic dispute between the 40-year-old man and his partner.
Senior Sergeant Mark Offen said police spoke to the man and persuaded him to ''give up''.
''They were able to coax the man out of the address.''
He said a police negotiation team was sent to the address but was stood down with the matter being resolved before the officers arrived.
Nearby residents were evacuated from their homes as a precaution. A female occupant from the house police were sent to managed to escape the premise unharmed, followed soon after by the man who had been making the threats.
He was arrested for threatening behaviour.
The Temuka Volunteer Fire Brigade also attended. Chief fire officer Richard Webb said there was no damage to the house, but the smell of fumes was evident.
