A bach in the Marlborough Sounds was destroyed by fire in the early hours of the morning.
Firefighters were alerted to the Waterfall Bay blaze in Queen Charlotte Sound at 3.40am.
The bay has no road access and Picton firefighters used a Marlborough coast guard boat to reach the fire. Two rural crews also travelled by boat to help fight the fire.
Fire Service southern communications shift manager Riwai Grace said the bach was totally destroyed.
Grace said the fire was caused by an accident with a brazier. Fire investigators would not examine the scene, since the cause was already known and not considered suspicious.
Grace said working smoke alarms saved the lives of those in the bach.
A Fire Service spokesman told Newstalk ZB there were five people staying at the bach.
