A Kaikoura artist has won an international art competition for an artwork influenced by the Canterbury earthquakes.

Ruth Stirnimann's winning work, Earth Grid 4, was dedicated to Christchurch and is currently hanging in Rome's il Collezionista.

The gallery launched the international competition, La Tua Arte Nel Sociale, and Stirnimann beat 1050 other artists to take the top spot.

She said the painting was a "humble contribution to console the pain that the 2010 and 2011 disasters caused".

With patterns flowing from the four corners of the painting, Stirnimann said it represented "new ideas for the rebuild and mainly giving strength to people".

She hoped to exhibit the painting elsewhere in Italy and Germany, if it was not sold before she had a chance to do so.

Opinion poll

Is the mayor correct to put libraries, pools and community facilities ahead of the Town Hall?

Absolutely, they're far more important

I think funds should be split between those facilities and the town hall

No, the Town Hall should be rebuilt first

Just demolish the Town Hall completely instead of rebuilding
