A man has been taken to hospital with minor injuries after the Nissan van he was driving collided with a truck-trailer in Tuamarina last night.

Senior sergeant Dan Mattison, of Blenheim, said the man, who is believed to be in his 60s, was lucky to be alive after the crash which happened about 6.30pn on State Highway 1.

Mattison believed the south-bound van had crossed the centre line and clipped the front of north-bound truck’s trailer.

The van spun and slid across the road, he said.

The door of the van was found several metres from where the van came to a stop.

The male driver of the truck-trailer unit was not injured.

Volunteer firefighters from Blenheim and Rarangi attended.

The state highway was reduced to one lane while firefighters cleared the road.

Opinion poll

The lower drink-driving limits from December are:

Great - too much carnage on our roads.

Overkill - targets moderate drinkers, not the heavies

Still too little - make it zero tolerance.

Sensible - punishment is in line with lesser breaches of limit.
