Police searching for a man and woman involved in a violent altercation in Christchurch's Bealey Ave have been unable to find them.
A bystander told The Press she saw a "big beefy" man, wearing only underwear, smash the window of a car parked in front of his own opposite Southern Cross Hospital just after 7pm on Wednesday.
The man climbed through the window and pushed the female driver into the passenger seat. "She was kicking and screaming and trying to get away."
The bystander, who did not want to be named, said a colleague phoned police, but it appeared the man and woman drove away before police could get there.
An appeal went out on the police's Facebook page for information, including details of the two vehicles: a white Toyota Caldina with the registration DAA998 and a grey Mitsubishi Lancer with the registration EAW703.
Detective Sergeant Joel Syme said police had so far been unable to identify or locate the man and woman. Investigators were still unsure what had happened.
"It could be a domestic, it could be a fight. Obviously we're treating it as serious until we learn otherwise. We want to make sure everyone is safe and well."
Anyone with information should phone police on 03 363-7400.
