THE BOSS: Can Bruce Springsteen be persuaded to play Christchurch?

Christchurch Mayor Lianne Dalziel has written to musician Bruce Springsteen asking him to come to Christchurch and play in Cathedral Square, unplugged.

Dalziel's letter was one of many hand-delivered to Springsteen's music studio in the United States before Christmas.

No reply has been received.

In the letter, Dalziel said the people of Canterbury were renowned for their stoicism.

"This is a positive trait," she said. "But it can mask the depth of trauma that is still experienced three years on."

She said a Springsteen performance would give the city a "psychological boost".

Springsteen has been known for visiting disaster zones and giving free concerts to lift spirits, but despite organising two concerts in Auckland, his manager had ruled out a visit to Christchurch when Springsteen comes to New Zealand next month.

Concert campaigner Mark Belton said a Christchurch concert had been ruled out because of logistical problems with venues.

He proposed holding a free, unplugged, open-air concert in Cathedral Square to minimise challenges.
