Truck drivers are skirting Scirt’s rules and attempting to cross a South Brighton bridge despite it being jacked up and on temporary piles.

The Stronger Christchurch Infrastructure Rebuild Team (Scirt) said drivers of heavy vehicles risked a ‘‘substantial’’ fine for using the Bridge St bridge.

‘‘They are also endangering people’s lives. There are two signs and an electronic sign reminding drivers of the weight limits, but some drivers are ignoring these,’’ it said.

The bridge is on the main route to South New Brighton and Southshore, and was closed after the earthquakes.

It is now open to two-way traffic, while still undergoing a high-tech repair job - apart from heavy trucks.

Opinion poll

Is the mayor correct to put libraries, pools and community facilities ahead of the Town Hall?

Absolutely, they're far more important

I think funds should be split between those facilities and the town hall

No, the Town Hall should be rebuilt first

Just demolish the Town Hall completely instead of rebuilding
