Three suspected drink-drivers crashed into a ditch, a power pole and a fence in separate incidents across rural Canterbury.
About 2.10am yesterday, a car crashed into a ditch in Christchurch-Akaroa Rd (SH75) near Motukarara.
Police said there were three German nationals in the car, including the 20-year-old driver, who allegedly recorded 647mcg/L in a breath test. He told attending police they had been drinking in the vehicle around Christchurch and were headed to Little River when he crashed.
His backseat passenger was taken to Christchurch Hospital with abdominal injuries. That young man was expected to be discharged today.
About 9.50pm on Saturday, a car load of young people crashed into a fence on Dunsandel Rd. The driver was breath tested and recorded a result just over the limit.
About 11.30pm on Friday, a vehicle smashed into a power pole on Hororata Rd, near Downs Rd, knocking it about a metre closer to the ground.
The vehicle had left the scene by the time police arrived.
Senior Constable Dave Pitkethley said the irresponsibility of drink-drivers was frustrating.
It took police time away from other serious crimes.
