Snow has been reported in Tekapo and Mt Lyford this morning with Metservice predicting even colder temperatures over the next 48 hours.

A Metservice duty forecaster said the snow overnight was not unexpected and had been predicted down to 1200 metres in Canterbury.

Snow had also been spotted on webcams in The Remarkables and Cardrona down in Otago.

Temperatures were expected to rise later today, but drop again overnight with snow down to 700 metres in Fiordland.

On Sunday night, forecasters were expecting low level snow in the mountains around the South Island with very low temperatures across the island on Monday.

The snow was not unusual for this time of year and was not expected to reach urban centres.
