Two trampers were rescued yesterday after a long night in the bush near the foothills of the Southern Alps.

The women, both in their early-30s, were separated from their companions yesterday afternoon.

When they failed to return to the Tutaekuri Hut last night, their companions activated their locator beacons for emergency services.

The Greymouth-based rescue helicopter arrived at the hut just before midnight and started a search for the women.

The pair were eventually found 10 kilometres from the hut when one of the missing women used the flash of her digital camera to signal searchers.

They were found cold but uninjured.

The lower drink-driving limits from December are:

Great - too much carnage on our roads.

Overkill - targets moderate drinkers, not the heavies

Still too little - make it zero tolerance.

Sensible - punishment is in line with lesser breaches of limit.
