Kids of all ages lined up to try on firefighting helmets and climb all over vintage fire engines at the annual Emergency Services Open Day yesterday.

The Pegasus township event attracted families from all over Canterbury keen to give their kids a positive impression of emergency services.

Almost every emergency organisation turned out for the day, which included demonstrations of the Jaws of Life in action.

The Westpac Rescue Helicopter staged a water rescue in Pegasus lake, much to the delight of onlookers.

Sonya Setter from Kaiapoi brought her two sons to the open day.

''It's really cool and the kids are loving it,'' she said.

Volunteer firefighter Phil Lamont's two daughters got to play in their father's fire engine and try on his helmet.

Mother, Angela, said it was a great day out for the whole family.

The open day was one of the largest emergency services open days in the country.

Is the mayor correct to put libraries, pools and community facilities ahead of the Town Hall?

Absolutely, they're far more important

I think funds should be split between those facilities and the town hall

No, the Town Hall should be rebuilt first

Just demolish the Town Hall completely instead of rebuilding
