Two people are in hospital with significant leg injuries after a car crash near Glentunnel.

The pair, both in their twenties, were the occupants of a van that collided with another vehicle about 6:30pm in Wairiri Rd.

They were trapped for about an hour before they were cut free from the wreckage by the local fire service.

Both were flown by Westpac Rescue Helicopter with significant leg injuries to Christchurch Hospital.

St John Ambulance transported the driver of the other car to hospital with chest injuries.
