Missing man found 200km from home

A man who went missing nearly three weeks ago has been found after a nearly 200km journey on foot. 

Police said Christchurch man Joseph Walter Woods, 40, was found "safe and well" just south of Makikihi, South Canterbury, yesterday. 

A member of of public saw him walking along State Highway 1, near the turn-off to Waimate south of Timaru, and phoned police. 

"It is believed he had walked from Christchurch to South Canterbury," Detective Wayne Boyd said.

Woods went missing from his residential address in Hoon Hay on February 13.

Police had expressed concerns for his well-being as he was on medication.

Family members had been searching Selwyn after Woods was spotted in Dunsandel, but found no sign of him.

Boyd said Woods' family was relieved he was found safe and well. 

"He has now been referred to health authorities," he said.

Boyd said police were grateful for the assistance of the media and members of public who came forward with information and sightings.
