About 700 homes in Christchurch are without a basic telephone service because of faults caused by flooding and network owner Chorus cannot say when they will be fixed.
A spokeswoman for Chorus said it had had about 550 fault notifications from telephone retailers like Telecom and Vodafone.
But there would probably be a couple of hundred more because some people did not log faults.
The faults are in Central Christchurch, New Brighton, Papanui and St Albans. Chorus staff would work over the weekend to try and get the faults fixed.
