Stormtroopers, anime characters and zombies are among the weird and wonderful characters celebrating Christchurch's Armageddon Expo this weekend.

The annual two-day event attracted 7,000 science fiction and fantasy fans, many dressed up as their favourite characters from cartoons, television and movies.

This year's event includes special animation screenings, a dedicated zombie area, eating challenges and a variety of collectables.

Celebrity guests include stars from pop-culture classic Doctor Who, as well as actors from The Hobbit films and television and video-game voice actor Steve Blum.

The Armageddon Expo is on today from 10am to 5pm at the Addington Raceway. Entry costs $7.

Opinion poll

Is the mayor correct to put libraries, pools and community facilities ahead of the Town Hall?

Absolutely, they're far more important

I think funds should be split between those facilities and the town hall

No, the Town Hall should be rebuilt first

Just demolish the Town Hall completely instead of rebuilding
