Bashing victim dies in hospital

A man allegedly assaulted last weekend has died of his injuries.

Utupo Alfred Waterhouse died at Christchurch Hospital on Sunday after being injured in an alleged assault outside a New Brighton party in Beresford St in the early hours of March 2.

The 20-year-old, known as Alfred, had been in a coma in the hospital's intensive care unit since the incident. He was a former Linwood College pupil and was married with children.

A 20-year-old was charged with injuring with intent and will appear in court on March 24.

A second man, aged 30, had been charged with assault charge and was remanded on bail to appear on Wednesday.

Police are now considering laying additional charges against the alleged primary offender.
