ON THE SCENE: Armed police blocked access to Abraham Heights before arresting a man outside a nearby house.

A man has been charged with possessing an offensive weapon after armed police responded to reports of a man seen carrying a bow and arrow and nunchaku in a Nelson suburb. 

Police received calls from members of the public who saw the man on Chamboard Place and Abraham Heights with a bow and arrow and nunchaku about 10.30am. 

Armed police cordoned both ends of Abraham Heights and challenged the man as he stood in a driveway.

Police said he complied with instructions and was taken into custody without incident about 11am.
