Crews from three fire engines and two helicopters were called to battle a large grass fire at the Jacks Point golf course on the outskirts of Queenstown.

It is believed the fire was started by a spark from a ride-on lawnmower.

The fire was contained but Department of Conservation staff remained on the course dampening down hot spots.

The 18-hole course is at the centre of a 1200-home subdivision.

It is understood no houses were evacuated.
