Surfers have rescued two fishermen who were thrown from their boat on the West Coast.
The two Westport men, aged 59 and 23, had been in an 2.5m fibreglass recreational fishing boat. Police said they were trying to enter the Buller River when their boat rolled.
The Westport rescue boat and a rescue helicopter were sent as the men were caught by the current and taken out to sea off Carters Beach, Westport.
Two surfers managed to take them to shore.
They were taken to hospital for a check-up and discharged.
Police said there had been reports of other people in the water "but this was subsequently identified as debris from the boat".
