Orion crews are battling against a number of cable and lines faults caused by storm damage.

Many parts of Banks Peninsula remain without power this afternoon, Orion spokesman Stephen Godfrey said.

‘‘Investigators are still trying to locate where the faults are...as a result of broken branches.

‘‘It’s all to do with the storm.’’

The outages affected more than 7000 customers this morning but had been restored to most, he said.

About 1600 customers remained without power.

‘‘The network near Lyttelton is the one we’re having trouble with...we’re not sure yet where the issue is.’’Restaurant owner Nick Freeman, of Freemans in Lyttelton, had to ‘‘bite the bullet’’ and send his chefs and waiting staff home after a day without power.

The restaurant usually opened at 10am on Sundays, he said, so it was a lost day of trading.

‘‘Our fridges are down obviously and the stock is really starting to deteriorate.’’

He said most pubs and cafes in the port town had decided to close for the day.
