Christchurch police are celebrating a quiet and calm St Patrick's Day, with only three revellers arrested overnight.

A police spokesperson said few problems relating to St Patrick's Day celebrations were reported in and around Christchurch overnight.

Extra police were rostered last night, but only three arrests were made - all for low-level behaviour offences.

"The warm weather drew good numbers of people to some bars, which were generally well-managed and reflect the low incident of trouble encountered," the spokesperson said.

A number of checkpoints were also set up across the city, with police catching five drink-drivers and impounding two vehicles.

Opinion poll

Is the mayor correct to put libraries, pools and community facilities ahead of the Town Hall?

Absolutely, they're far more important

I think funds should be split between those facilities and the town hall

No, the Town Hall should be rebuilt first

Just demolish the Town Hall completely instead of rebuilding
