Two motorcyclists have been seriously injured after a group riding near Christchurch were involved in a crash.

Three motorcyclists came off the road and crashed into a ditch on Gebbies Pass, between Tai Tapu and Governors Bay, just after 12.30pm today.

A St John spokesman said he understood the motorcyclists were part of a larger group.

Two people were flown to Christchurch Hospital by the Westpac Rescue Helicopter with serious injuries.

A third person was treated at the scene, but did not need to go to hospital.

The cause of the crash was not yet known.
