A man is seriously injured after falling down a lift shaft in a Dunedin building this morning.

A St John Ambulance spokesman said emergency services had been called to the scene at Speight's Brewery where a man had fallen down the shaft.

Fire Service southern communications centre manager Mel Barbara said the man fell down the shaft around 9.10 this morning but had now been rescued.

The man has been rushed to Dunedin Hospital in a serious condition.

Barbara said the Fire Service was stabilising the lift shaft.

Dunedin organiser of the Service and Food Workers Union Steven Briggs said he had not heard about the incident.

He said he was unaware of any safety issues at Speight's.

"This is the first time something like this has come up. Each time I've been visiting members at the plant they've been most careful."
