Pair rescued after falling over bluff
A distraught woman fell over a bluff trying to catch her boyfriend as he fell in front of her.
The incident happened while the pair were walking near the Puhi Puhi River, north of Kaikoura, on Saturday evening.
A Westpac Rescue Helicopter spokesman said the man had fallen off a bluff while walking, fracturing his leg.
His girlfriend "went to grab him and went over too".
The woman was not injured but was "pretty distraught" by the incident, the spokesman said.
The rescue helicopter crew were unable to reach the pair because of poor weather conditions.
They were eventually rescued by police search and rescue staff and transported to Kaikoura Hospital by road ambulance.
"They were pretty lucky to get out of there; they did not have the proper equipment for an overnight stay," the spokesman said.
