A horse was killed after straying onto the Southern Motorway in Christchurch tonight.

Two horses were on the road near Brougham St when one was struck by a car at about 7.45pm.

The driver of the vehicle was not injured.

Police communications said they received 15 calls within minutes of the horse being struck and were currently cleaning up the scene.
