A man has been killed on a Northern Southland property after the fertiliser spreader truck he was operating overturned.

Senior Sergeant Steve Aitken, of Dunedin, said emergency services were called to a property on the Te Anau Mossburn Highway at 10.20am after a report was received about the incident.

When emergency services arrived at the scene the man had already died, Aitken said.

A witness at the scene, earlier this morning, said the truck was upside down and a helicopter was waiting.

A canvas cover had been set up next to the cab truck as emergency services worked on the driver.

No further details are available.
