A man has appeared in court on a raft of charges after police chased a stolen car through suburban Christchurch.

Police say a Mitsubishi Lancer was reported stolen from a home in Ilam about 7am, Saturday.

A short time later, it was seen by police in the St Albans area, but it failed to stop and a short pursuit followed.

The driver of the car stopped near the intersection of Bealey Ave and Champion St and ran away. He was arrested nearby.

Nicholas Andrew Hanson, 28, was charged with possession of utensils, including a syringe, driving while disqualified, failing to stop and dangerous driving when he appeared in Christchurch District Court this morning.

He was remanded in custody without plea until May 19.
