A man is dead and two children injured after a crash in North Canterbury this afternoon.

A police spokesman said the collision, involving a car and a commercial vehicle, was in Gressons Rd, Waikuku, about 500 metres west of State Highway 1, about 2.45pm.

The car, driven by a man, 41, with two children under 7 on board, rolled several times and ended up in a paddock.

The spokesman said initial inquiries suggested neither the man nor the children were wearing seatbelts.

Police believe the vehicle, a Chevrolet Blazer, was travelling west towards Rangiora and was overtaking a small truck when the vehicles made contact, causing the Chevrolet to roll.

The man, who is from the North Island, died at the scene. The children were taken to Christchurch Hospital with moderate injuries.

The driver of the commercial vehicle was not injured.

Police are at the scene and cordons are in place.

The cordons are expected to be removed about 6pm.

Police expect to release the name of the man tomorrow.
