Police have released the name of the baby who died after a collision in South Canterbury on Wednesday.

He was 5-week-old Amadeus Tutunoa, of Timaru.

He died at Timaru Hospital on Wednesday night after a two-vehicle crash on State Highway 1 near Pareora that afternoon.

Two adults and two older children who were in the same car as Amadeus were also taken to hospital, but were discharged the same day. The children had minor injuries.

Police said the infant was in a rear-facing child restraint in the back seat behind the driver.

"At this stage there are no immediate safety concerns identified in relation to the child restraint," police said today.

The case has been referred to the coroner and the police investigation into the crash is continuing.
