Wai Fong Lau, 87, was in bed at her Redcliffs home when her house collapsed in a landslide.
Wai Fong lived in Raekura Place with her grandson and his wife.
The couple were at work at the time of the earthquake and had struggled to get home because of damaged roads.
Their house was almost torn in half by the quake.
Wai Fong is survived by her five children. She was born in Shantou city in China and was the eldest of three children.
She lived in Hong Kong before immigrating to Australia in 1988 and then moved to New Zealand with her grandson, Season Yeung, in 2009.
Wai Fong liked watching television, in particular the Cantonese television series. Season said his grandmother
spent most of her time looking after her children and grandchildren.
‘‘She was an excellent cook and was very caring and generous to every member of her family,’’ he said.
‘‘Her sudden passing was a great shock to her family. She will always be remembered for her kindness and generosity.’’
