A green Cathedral Square is one of the key proposals contained in a 150-page draft plan for the city rebuild.

The draft Central City Plan costing an estimated $2 billion over 20 years will open for public consultation on Tuesday, August 16.

Light rail, a smaller central business district (CBD), a new swimming centre and specialised precincts are among features of the draft plan adopted by council on Tuesday.

A summary of the plan will be dropped into mailboxes throughout Christchurch on Saturday, August 20.

The public consultation period, including a two-week roadshown and an international speakers' series, will run until September 16.

The council will hold hearings on written submissions in October before a final plan is presented to Cera for approval in December.
