Crowne Plaza Hotel demolition starts today
Demolition starts today on a central Christchurch hotel.
The Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority (Cera) this morning said Mackay Leighs Demolition had been awarded the contract to demolish the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Kilmore St.
Cera's head of operations, Warwick Issacs, said the deconstruction would be done by "conventional means'' over a 27-week period.
"The building will be stripped of all materials, then a combination of excavators and a 40-metre, ultra-high reach will be used to demolish the structure,'' he said.
"The basement will be removed and backfilled and the site will eventually be grassed over."
Demolition will be completed by late June.
Isaacs said there would be no changes to the roading configuration at this point.
