Christchurch rumbled by quakes
A 24-hour period without any significant earthquakes ended for Christchurch residents with a 3.7, a 4.5 and then a 4.0-magnitude tremor this morning.*
The 3.7-magnitude quake, which struck shortly before 3am, was centred 10 kilometres east of Christchurch at a depth of 10km.
The 4.5-magnitude quake struck at 6.46am, centred 20km east of Christchurch at a depth of 12km, while the 4.0-magnitude shake struck just after 8.30am, centred 20km west of Christchurch and 9km deep.
The continued shaking comes as the city's business leaders call for urgent decisions to be made on the siting of Christchurch's new convention centre and the future of AMI Stadium.
Canterbury Employers' Chamber of Commerce chief executive Peter Townsend said authorities could not afford to dally over positioning of infrastructure assets such as the convention centre because it was critical to determining where other developments would go.
"The centre's siting and AMI Stadium are key decisions required immediately," he said.
"They are critical to what will happen in a lot of the rest of the city."
Demolition of the city's quake-damaged convention centre started last week.
The city council plans to build a $200 million replacement but has yet to confirm where it will be built.

they need to put the rebuild on hold now, had a business in the CBD just around the corner from the Grand chanc. the land report has come back 'suspectable to liquafaction with a large quake'!! cant get insurance, broker asks why the hell do i want to go back into the city - hes right we are not and will stay in OZ. They really need to move the city, there are too many river beds running underneath, the avon just being the main one.
The convention centre and sports centre should be within easy walking distance of a new public transport hub ala Melbourne, where the convention centre and a big stadium are near the Southern Cross train, bus and tram station.
At the very least they should be on a light rail and/or bus route so that people from all over the city can reach them easily by public transport.
There are some incorrect reporting's in this article. We in Christchurch DID NOT go for those 24 hours without an earthquake. GNS only publishes earthquakes above a certain magnitude. If you want to see what has really been going on go to http://www.canterburyquakelive.co.nz/ This website shows that on Sunday 22 Jan 2012 there were 2 earthquakes listed - one at 2:14pm & another at 12:34pm. GNS does not have all the information on show for everyone to see.
The mere fact that we are still getting substantial shakes daily consolidates the thinking that any major construction must be delayed for a little longer - while everyone would love to see the city rebuilt with zest and energy, the reality is that the city is just too unstable both seismically and managerially.
Moving out east are they geonet guys? Or west? or bouncing round...
We are visiting from Arizona and have felt each and every quake since arriving on 14, Jan. Your city is so beautiful ,so hoping the rebuilding goes on. Have enjoyed trips around your beautiful countryside. Our prayers for the citizens of Christchurch & surrounding areas.
Where's the people now who, just a couple of weeks ago, were saying that the quakes had left the land and were moving out to sea? Just goes to show that no one really knows...
I'm just so sick of quakes! Rebuilding --- we need to plan but not rush in oreder to make the best decisions. I feel the person quoted here is rushing a bit.
If they were responsible with money they would wait several years until the seismic activity has died down and there has been adequate time to assess all requirements for convention centres and such. Rush in now, regret later.

AS an eastern suburbs resident i must express my contempt for those whose only concern seems to be the rebuilding of AMI stadium. The homes and rehousing of the people must come before any bloody stadium. The sooner the religion of rugby is erased from the minds of kiwis the better.
