Take your pick - one Canterbury earthquake website suggests we are about to hit 10,000 quakes since 4.35am on September 4, 2010, while another says the region still has a way to go.

The Christchurch Quake Map site said tonight Canterbury was on the cusp of clicking over to five figures from the 9999 shakes it had experienced over the past 16 months.

However, Canterbury Quake Live said there had been 9586 quakes in the same period, some 414 short of the 10,000 figure.
