Van-sized boulder hits home
A boulder the size of van has smashed through the deck into the poles supporting a red-stickered hillside Sumner house.
The house at 31 Finnsarby Pl was cordoned off last night after the rock came tumbling down.
The house is unoccupied.
Terry Huggins, who lives opposite the property, was alerted to the boulder by a loud sound.
His friend, who saw it happen, said the house shook when it was hit and it sent a cloud of dust into the air.
It is the third large boulder to hit the house, with one lodged in a bedroom.
Huggins is one of a handful of residents living in the predominantly red-zoned area.
It is understood that Christchurch City Council staff and geotechnical engineers inspected the property this morning.
What caused the rock to fall is still being determined.
Sumner Residents' Association chairman Darren Wright said the ongoing movement of rocks was a concern, but not unexpected."
