The $36 million restoration of the Great Hall and the Clock Tower at the Christchurch Arts Centre has taken a step forward with the arrival of steel braces.

The braces were craned in today to stabilise the areas at the base of the Clock Tower that used to house Rutherford's Den and Le Cafe.

The braces mean restoration work can start at ground level.

The project to restore the northwestern corner of the historic Arts Centre complex is due for completion in 2015.

The Registry building on the northeastern corner of the centre is due to open as commercial office space in July, but a tenant has not yet been found.

Repair and strengthening work at the centre is expected to take seven years and cost $290m.

The centre will reopen in phases as parts of the complex are restored.
