It appears the sky is the limit for settling Port Hills insurance claims.

Arrow International, Southern Response's earthquake claims project manager, yesterday used a helicopter to drop geotechnical testing equipment on to a Ferrymead Tce property unable to be accessed by heavy machinery from the road.

The ground was being tested to help Arrow determine a repair or rebuild strategy for the house.

Southern Response/Arrow geotechnical engineer Eric Bird said the site was "complex" because it involved steep slopes, retaining walls and the lack of road access.

Access to some Port Hills properties could be a "real issue" for demolitions, rebuilds and repairs, he said.

"Like we saw with the helicopter moving drill rig, it gets pretty complicated when you're talking about moving a house piece by piece," Bird said.

Landowner Rob Laidlaw had been critical of Southern Response's communication, but was pleased the insurer was now being "proactive" about resolving his claim.

"It certainly looks as though they're doing everything possible to move it along," he said.
