Chch best and worst: We can do this
February 22: Our new city
The best thing to come of the earthquakes would definitely be the outpouring of compassion and support from all over the show.
We can appreciate how precious life is when it's turned upside down.
There has been a huge spike in vandalism and petty crime. I think that when people no longer have a place to be proud of, somewhere to call your own, and frustration meets you at every turn, it is inevitable.
Kids and young adults are moved around, they feel the pressure that their folks are under to afford rising rent and deal with insurance issues.
They feel the aftershocks. Their friends have moved away. They have to go to a new school. Some will direct this frustration and anger at their new environment, not thinking of the consequences of their actions.
It's a hard problem to solve. I suppose we just need to focus on the little picture and support our family, friends and neighbours (sometimes newly discovered when meeting in knee-deep liquifaction!).
We can do this Christchurch. We'll get through it.
