A resource consent hearing for a proposal to build a National Conservatorium of Music on an Arts Centre car park has been postponed until February.

The Christchurch City Council has approved funding for the controversial $24.3 million building, which is to be leased to the University of Canterbury.

Vice-chancellor Rod Carr said last night the delay had been sought by the university to "reconsider some of the design elements of the building".

"We think it is only fair that we take the time to sit back, consider legitimate concerns and think about how we might be able to address them.

"The conservatorium proposal is an example of our desire for greater engagement to better connect with the city. However, pressing on with a resource consent hearing without thinking about how we might reconsider some of the design elements would be counterproductive in terms of our relationship with the Christchurch community."
